The American Bulldog

puppy-1The origin of the Bulldog in America goes back to the beginnings of our country.  Early settlers brought their dogs along to the new world during the 1700’s and 1800’s. The majority of settlers with Bulldogs migrated to the Southern United States.  Those early Bulldogs were used on family farms and plantations as catch dogs, herd dogs, and as protection dogs for their families.  Unfortunately, urbanization took its toll on the population of the Bulldog as the need for such animals was reduced.  By the late 1940’s the Bulldog could only be found in a few places on Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama.

One man who is credited with revitalizing the puppy-2Bulldog and bringing back its popularity, is Mr. John D. Johnson of Summerville, Georgia. Mr. Johnson sought out the best of the existing breed of his day and began a program to restore the Bulldog to its place as a family dog.  In a conversation with Mr. Johnson prior to our first American Bulldog purchase, Mr. Johnson credited his wife, Mildred, for her assistance.  She was a strong driving force in his lifes work

The dog Mr. Johnson bred for is big boned with heavy shoulders.  The hips should be well muscled, but not as wide as the shoulders.  The chest should be wide with good depth, the neck well muscled of medium length.  The Johnson type dog should have a broad, square head with a flat top and short muzzle. The lower jaw should protrude with an under bite.  The eyes should be set well apart.  The original breed standard was for the males to be 20 inches at the shoulder and weigh 75 pounds and up.  The females should be no shorter than 16 inches and weigh 60 pounds and up.  The classic Johnson type dog we see today is generally on the up side of these figures. Many of Mr. Johnson’s dogs were well over 100 pounds.

puppy-3The other type of American Bulldog recognized today is the Standard American Bulldog.  This was originally recognized as the “Scott-Type, so named for Alan Scott, one of the other men credited with revitalizing the American Bulldog Breed. Scott type or Standard males should be 23 to 27 inches at the withers and weigh from 75 to 110 pounds., females, 21 to 25 inches, 60 to 85 pounds. The weight should be proportional to size.  These dogs are considered to be more performance type dogs.

The American Bulldog as we know it today is a wonderful family dog.  It is a loyal, bold and fearless dog that will bond strongly with its owner.  This breed is used as home guardians, farm dogs, hunting dogs.  The American Bulldog, once considered to be only a ‘farm’ dog, has enjoyed a surge in popularity due in part to movies such as “Homeward Bound” and “Little Rascals.”

The American Bulldog is very versatile, able to adapt to the needs of itspuppy-4 family. However, as with any large dog, children should be supervised when in their presence.  Proper socialization is important in the proper development of each dog.  The American Bulldog as a breed has a stubborn streak, so obedience training is strongly recommended.  This is a dog that will think for its self and look for the Alpha position if its owner does not take the lead.

At Patriot American Bulldogs, it is our goal to have both types of dogs available in our breeding program in order to meet the needs of your family.
